A group of 20 British Universities, called Russell Group, said in a report that student might be urged to repay their loans earlier and at higher interest rates.

Russell Groups, included top universities like Oxford, Cambridge and UCL, claimed that it could face significant lack of govt funding in next 2-3 years.

In the opinion of Mr. Porter, president of the National Union of Students, the young people have already paid the universities huge sums of money and should not be held responsible for the cuts in government funding. He is determined that it is the management of universities that should have anticipated the changes and prepared for it.

The Russell Group, however, is determined that it is the extremely low interest rates on student loans that impose high costs on the UK government. Therefore, they feel that measures the group proposes to take seem fair to the universities.

Motivating students or encourage them for participation in class and other activities is not always an easy job. Only a good teacher can do it.

Here are Nine Methods that may work for you to keep motivating your students in classroom.

1 – Remain Positive
Yelling and threatening students is not an effective way to motivate. Remaining positive and focusing on achievement will motivate students and help to create mutual respect for each individual and for learning.

2 – Provide Opportunities for Success
Struggling students need to succeed in some small ways in order to be motivated to achieve in greater ways. Without lowing your expectations, find ways to allow these struggling students to succeed.

3 – Be Excited
The more excited you are about something, the more excited your students will be. If you find the topic you are teaching boring, so will your students, so find creative ways to teach the most boring lessons.

4 – Allow Students to Earn Rewards
Individual and whole class rewards can be a great motivation, especially when looking for appropriate behavior.

5 – Teach Teamwork
Have activities that your students can work on together. Group your students for simple projects such as finding a current event to share every week. Have your students work in teams on projects that enable learning through exploration.

6 – Public Praise
Make a habit of publicly praising students for achievement. You can even go as far as to create a certificate of achievement, have the student stand to receive the certificate and send it home for the child’s parents to display on the refrigerator.

7 – Appropriate Praise
Praise students appropriately. If you are struggling to motivate a child, be careful to not praise him for a non-achievement. Praise him for a job well done. Rewards and praise should not be handed out left and right, instead, they should be selective and appropriate in order to motivate your students.

8 – Teach Problem Solving Skills
Teaching your students to solve problems will allow them to be naturally interested in what they are learning. Providing opportunities for students to make mistakes and figure out how to accomplish a goal will make school more interesting, and thus motivate them to try.

9 – Provide Opportunities for Varied Experiences
Different children will succeed in different areas in their lives. Include opportunities for learning each of the multiple intelligences theorized by Dr. Gardner in 1983. This allows students to succeed in a variety of ways. The more success a student sees in the classroom, the more motivated he will be to continue to succeed.

Motivating students takes a little effort, but the reward is well worth the work.

Hundreds of thousands of students may miss out on university this autumn

Vice-Chancellors and students erupted in fury after more than £ 500 million university budget cuts were announced today.

Universities will be fined about 10 million pounds for recruiting too many students last year, and the total intake of undergraduates in time could stop this year for the first time in recent history.

This means that hundreds of thousands of school leavers can get lost in college this fall. Many places are already promised to those who missed last year, creating a bottleneck.

Leading universities warned of dire consequences on the quality of education and rectors said the cuts were deeper than expected. Student leaders described as an act of “self-harm” by the Government.

The Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE), the body which distributes government money to universities, appearing in spending cuts would fall in the academic year 2010/11.

He emphasized that the funding of £ 449 million lower than expected, and £ 518 million less than last year.

Mr Mandelson, the Secretary of Universities, announced in December that £ 135 million was vice-rectors cut budgets “next year, on top of £ 180 million efficiency savings.

Dr Wendy Piatt, director general of the Russell Group, said: “Our main institutions can not remain competitive internationally, provide a first experience in teaching and the level of generous support to provide disadvantaged students do not have access to a increased funding.

Thousands of British diplomats living abroad lose their right to self-education boarding school in Britain for their children under plans being finalized by the ministers.

From September, parents have to pay a 5 percent enrollment of children raised in Britain, with more top-ups for more expensive schools like Eton and Harrow that charge more than £ 28,000 a year.

This could mean that parents paying at least an extra £ 1,300 per child for one year. Whitehall officials suggested that contributions could amount to 10 percent in the coming years.

The move was immediately condemned by independent schools, which says that the children would be the latest victims of retrenchment.

The measure is part of a comprehensive review of Whitehall boarding costs for the Army, officials working abroad and diplomats to make millions of pounds of efficiency savings. New staff abroad will also have business class flights reduced.

At the moment all Foreign Service personnel to escape boarding school education for their children to average independent school fees of around £ 22,000 a year. Those wanting to send their children to schools like Eton, Winchester, Radley, Sherborne, Wycombe Abbey and Rugby Roedean, who charge up to € 30,000, must pay the difference.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office, said negotiations continue with unions but the goal is to bring the diplomatic service in line with other government departments and the private sector.

The small print before the budget presented last week shows that the Treasury expects to recover at least 13 million pounds in fees and flights within two years, but larger savings are likely in the future.

Tony Seldon, head of Wellington College in Berkshire, said the diplomatic course of action to contribute to the education of their children was a mistake. He noted that many diplomats were at moderate wages between £ 50,000 and £ 70,000 and would not be able to pay the new rates.

“There are people in the diplomatic service, which could be earning five times more than if they worked for banks or domestic companies,” said Dr Seldon.

“There is a danger that the service will not be able to attract these people with high spirit of quality if they have to start paying fees.”

Hilary Moriarty, National Director of the Association of Boarding Schools’, said it was imperative that children have continuity in their education: “It’s ridiculous, if the children of diplomats have to suffer for helicopters to rescue banks.”

Students at London Metropolitan University wants governors to quit

Students and staff at London Metropolitan University called on their governments to leave today as fears were raised about the future of the university.

The class was already seated and ready for when the professor took his chair, slumped on his desk and wrote on the board: “Using everything we have learned this semester, prove that this chair does not exist.”

Fingers flew, erasers erased, notebooks were filled with a furious manner. Some students wrote over 30 pages in an hour of trying to disprove the existence of the chair. A member of the class however, got up and finished in less than a minute.

Weeks later, when the notes were issued, the rest of the group wondered how he could have got one thing “A”, when he had written to all. His response was two words:

If asked about it, say that you have to tape the lecture for a friend.

3 – When the professor asks a question, raise your hand
If the professor calls on you, point to someone in the next row and say “He Knows.” Pick a different person each time.

4 – Bring a typewriter.
Use it to take notes

5 – Get up to go to the bathroom five or six times during the class.
Change clothes every time.

6 – Pretend to be asleep until five minutes before the end of class.
Then wake up and explain that you missed the lecture, and ask the professor to summarize
what he/she talked about.

Act angry when he/she doesn’t understand you.

10 – Bring a tape player and a tape of the school bell. Play it every 15 minutes.
