University/College students are the one majorly hit with current on going economic slowdown and increase in unemployment up to 2.64million(Highest since 1992) in UK. According to stats 1.03million students are unemployed among total 2.64million unemployed people in UK.

Sarah Walker from English Collective of Prostitutes, a welfare body for sex workers, spoke to reporters, She said: “(The government) know the cuts and the austerity programmes and the removing of grants, they know when they remove those resources they know it drives women further into poverty. The way that women survive poverty is often through sex work. The government knows that and they don’t seem to care frankly.”

Sarah Walker added: “It’s right across the sex industry. With sex work, you can work for maybe one evening a week and make enough money to cover all your expenses. It’s younger students who are just starting out in university and also women who are going back trying to get a degree or increase their skills.”

According to study published last year at London University 16% of students are willing to work as prostitute to pay their studies and 11% would work for some escort agencies. Also another study published recently by Leeds University found that 25% strippers and lap-dancers are students.

Estelle Hart, A women Officer at National Union of Students, said that government should have taken action regarding this serious issue and should decrease tuition fees especially in university and graduate level education.

However, Government said it is providing 180million/year for vulnerable teenagers and also no student has to pay up-front for their studies.

Government spokesman said: “Our reforms will make the system even fairer, with more financial support and lower monthly repayments once you are in well-paid work.”
These surprising figures comes as a result of a survey by vouchercodes.co.uk. According to survery 30% students are turning eBay and 36% use the internet other means to make extra cash and some are even living on these sources.

The trend for using ebay and internet business after less employment opportunities for students and also job market hit by recession. Surveys shows that undergraduates are turning to eBay, blogs and their own websites to get by even those who have part time jobs which means at least one whole day’s studying is lost to work.

Survey also showed that 7% use blogs and are adapting to affiliate marketing whilst others simply sell items on the plethora of online marketplaces available on the web.
According to a survey conducted by Security outfit, Tufin Technologies with support from the Association of Cheif Police Officer, found that over a fifth students in UK universities had hacked at least once in their students life.

The Survey of 1,000 UK university students shows that despite only 4% of students are studying computer sciences, 37% of them had hacked Facebook accounts, 26% email accounts with 10% breaching very serious activities like shopping online etc.

More surprising for me is that 39% of hackers use their own computer, others have used public computers and networks with 32% a university machine and 23% using an internet café.

The survey also found around 84% respondents saying that hacking was wrong, but that did not stop all of them from attempting it. There was no gender bias as equal number of boys and girls attempted hacking, while 18% of the students said that hacking was an easy task.

Survey also revealed that 46% of students with social networking or email accounts became victims to hacking.

Tufin Technologies’ Vice President of Products, Marketing & Business Development, Shaul Efraim, said that more than one in three students hacked someone’s system for fun, while a quarter said they were just curious.

Speaking on the findings, Efraim said, “It is clear we have a smart new generation emerging who understand how to get around computer systems – some are doing it just for fun others with slightly more sinister intent.”

The e-crime specialist with the Association of Chief Police Officers, Deputy Chief Constable Stuart Hyde, said that hacking was illegal and it’s imperative to educate youngsters about the bad effects of hacking.

A group of 20 British Universities, called Russell Group, said in a report that student might be urged to repay their loans earlier and at higher interest rates.

Russell Groups, included top universities like Oxford, Cambridge and UCL, claimed that it could face significant lack of govt funding in next 2-3 years.

In the opinion of Mr. Porter, president of the National Union of Students, the young people have already paid the universities huge sums of money and should not be held responsible for the cuts in government funding. He is determined that it is the management of universities that should have anticipated the changes and prepared for it.

The Russell Group, however, is determined that it is the extremely low interest rates on student loans that impose high costs on the UK government. Therefore, they feel that measures the group proposes to take seem fair to the universities.

According to National Union of Students (NUS) survey report, 1 in 7 female students at university in UK has been the victim of sexual assault or serious physical violence.

NUS surveyed over 2,000 female students from all around UK also found that 25% had been subjected to an unwanted sexual experience during their life at university or colleges. And only 10% of victim female students have reported the incident to police. Only 4% reported their attack to their University.

When asked why not, 50% of those who did not report to the police said they felt ashamed or embarrassed, while 43% thought they were “to blame for the violence committed against them”.

Indeed, as described by Olivia Bailey, NUS National Women’s Officer, results are very “disturbing” and describe the report as a “wake-up call”.

Bailey said: “Not enough is being done to encourage women students to report all instances of assault or harassment to their institutions or to the police. students must be left in “no doubt that such behavior will not be tolerated.”

Sandra Horley OBE, of the domestic violence charity Refuge, said: “It is vital that universities create an environment where women feel confident to speak out against abuse. Female students need to know where they can seek help, and must feel sure that their reports will be taken seriously. Women have the right to enjoy university life, focus on their studies and plan for their futures, without fear of intimidation of violence”.

YUSU Women’s Officer, Charlotte Philips, stated: “This report highlights the need for greater provisions, and crucially greater awareness of the existing provisions on campuses. We will work with the welfare team to create a greater awareness of services such as Nightline and the Open Door Team, whilst discussing with local authorities the potential of local specialist provisions for those who experience sexual assault or rape. We are planning an ‘End Violence Against Women’ campaign in the Autumn Term in which intends to help clarify people’s understanding of the boundaries of consent”.

An academic who spoke out against “dumbing down” the quality of university degrees won a long legal battle yesterday when the Court of Appeal accepted that he was forced out of their work.

Professor Paul Buckland shall be entitled to compensation from the University of Bournemouth after a previous ruling against him by the Employment Appeal Tribunal was set aside.

He resigned the presidency of the University of archeology of the environment in a dispute over the mark after he missed 18 of the 60 undergraduates who took second-year exams in 2006.

When 16 students retook the paper, Professor Buckland not all but two of them. He thought that “many of the jobs were of poor quality,” the Court of Appeal hearing.

A second marker endorsed its findings, as did the university board of examiners, while noting the high rate of failure and the need to address its causes.

However, his department was then reviewing the documents marked the third time and the marks were increased up to six percentage points from several students from a “clear no to pass a” potential “, depending on other results, the court heard.

Professor Buckland, who lives in Sheffield, took exception to the documents marked the third time, saying it was done “by someone who had no relevant expertise.

He accused the University of Bournemouth cheaper grades and make “a total mockery of the review process. He said the move was “part of a much larger foolproof” and amounted to “a clear affront to his integrity.”

The University held an internal investigation found for Professor Buckland. He said there should have been consulted on the decision to mark examination papers for the third time. But she was still unhappy and resigned in February 2007.

Took the university to an industrial tribunal, which decided in August 2008 that there had been a “fundamental violation of the implied term of trust” in his employment contract and that he was constructively dismissed.

The decision was overturned in March last year by the Employment Appeal Tribunal, but the Court of Appeal rejected the trial yesterday and restored the original sentence.

Lord Justice Sedley said the university could not defend the way that has undermined the rule and Professor Buckland was the “inevitable outcome” that had been constructively dismissed. Lord Justice Jacob said that “must be totally offended at the choice of” whether to accept repudiatory a breach of contract and resign, or continue at work.

If the university does not comply with it, the case of Professor Buckland attending an employment tribunal to the level of compensation to be assessed.

• University lecturers face reduced pensions, increased contributions or having to work longer, as vice presidents try to reduce costs (Greg Hurst writes). A review of the University pension plan could lead to its final salary scheme was replaced by one based on the average career earnings, with a retirement age increased from 60 to 65. The review concluded in April.

Foreign students from outside Europe who want to come to the UK to study must meet the highest standards of entry. The new regulations will ensure that students studying below grade level have limited capacity to work in the UK and that his office can not work in the UK.

The new measures for students affect Vincentian nationals wishing to come to Britain to study include:

01- Restriction of the courses of low-level (A levels and equivalent) to only the most trusted institutions;

02- A student studying under the first degree level or foundation degree course can only work 10 hours during term time;
03- The prohibition of lead in office for anyone studying a course in less than six months, and

04- The prohibition of the dependents of any of inferior course to study a foundation degree or level of work-will face the withdrawal of the United Kingdom if it is to do it.

In addition, new measures include:
05- The prohibition of foreign students studying courses below college level that includes a job – unless the course is being provided by a university, college or training provider that has the status of “high confidence sponsor ‘ ;

06- A requirement for students to demonstrate their English language ability by passing an examination approved safety – This applies to all students below (the foundation) grade level, including those who come to study the English language, and

07- The introduction of stricter criteria for the definition of providers of courses that count as “very confidence of the sponsors of foreign students. It is expected that all publicly funded universities and colleges will be highly reliable.

The UK authorities should ensure that there is a quick but rigorous to ensure that private training schools also can obtain that status as soon as possible.

These changes are part of a radical overhaul of the system of students who started last year. From March 2009 the British government has demanded that all foreign students to be sponsored by a school approved by the Border Agency UK, and to prove they can support themselves while in the UK before being granted a visa.

Also since March, any college or university that wishes to international students must be accredited and licensed.

Cheap Student Train Fare
The easiest way to get cheap train fare of students in the UK is booked in advance. Buying tickets a week or two in advance can literally quarter your train ticket and you can even save money when buying your ticket the day before on the Internet and collecting in the train station the next day. This is great if you are a student who is far from his hometown, as the cross country train tickets can be extremely costly and create a big dent in your travel budget!

If you travel a short distance (25 miles or less) and there is a possibility that you are returning the same day, getting a return. One can cost $ 5 to a destination, but it costs £ 5.20 for a comeback! Not sure why, but saves you money! So if there is a slight possibility that he returned the same day, spend the extra pennies just in case!

Going home for holidays or weekends? Do not let a single round. When traveling to and from major train stations in the UK, you can open a return. An open back allows you to revert back to their university town within 30 days the ticket is purchased, at any time, for a couple of extra pounds. It saves a single payment and must be one!

Student Discount Airline Tickets
Students don’t tend to fly from UK city to city, so this section is really just about flying abroad.

Get last hour student flights, not last minute.
Flights ast minutes used to be all the rage, but flying now companies are getting smarter and pushing prices of flights until the last couple of days a flight is available, making consumers think they are the cheapest have been for sale. You are much better looking at flights for students of two or three weeks before the planned flight date, as it is when they tend to be cheaper. Great if you want a weekend in Prague or Ibiza!

Double check taxes and supplements.
A common mistake made is thinking that you’re getting that amazing offer airline tickets flight student with a £ 1 and then realize you book we charged an extra £ 70 for taxes and surcharges fuel! Triple check the prices on the Internet … £ 3 a flight that sounds too good to be true, it will be too good to be true!

Fly with cheap airlines.
Students do not mind flying with as much as adults … Or should not anyway! Go to company flight discount websites such as Jet2 and Ryanair and Bmibaby and get the student discount airline tickets!

Student Bus Travel
How cheap bus ride really depends on where you live in the UK.

Get a free bus.
If you live in big cities like Manchester and Leeds, will usually have free city bus that runs the circle of the city throughout the day usually comes every 10-15 minutes. Look out for them if you ever visit a great city! Standard buses also tend to be very cheap if you know what to get.

If you live in a city or town, it is likely that buses are ridiculously expensive. Its probably best to literally walk or getting a lift to be perfectly honest!

Vice-Chancellors and students erupted in fury after more than £ 500 million university budget cuts were announced today.

Universities will be fined about 10 million pounds for recruiting too many students last year, and the total intake of undergraduates in time could stop this year for the first time in recent history.

This means that hundreds of thousands of school leavers can get lost in college this fall. Many places are already promised to those who missed last year, creating a bottleneck.

Leading universities warned of dire consequences on the quality of education and rectors said the cuts were deeper than expected. Student leaders described as an act of “self-harm” by the Government.

The Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE), the body which distributes government money to universities, appearing in spending cuts would fall in the academic year 2010/11.

He emphasized that the funding of £ 449 million lower than expected, and £ 518 million less than last year.

Mr Mandelson, the Secretary of Universities, announced in December that £ 135 million was vice-rectors cut budgets “next year, on top of £ 180 million efficiency savings.

In the next three years will be the university loses £ 950 million, research institutions more important to note that paralyze the industry.

Investment projects will be most affected, with 15 percent budget reduction, but teaching and research will also be affected.

The grant will be reduced in the teaching of 215 million pounds and that 40 million pounds was withdrawn funding for old and historic buildings are a key feature of many universities. Another £ 24 million will come from accelerated and intensely-taught postgraduate courses, and another 24 million pounds of funding for the establishment of two degrees year.

This comes after ministers said they wanted the universities to offer more options and flexible courses, including degrees of merit.

Ten million pounds has been earmarked to help universities to change their teaching to science and math topics, which they say is encouraged by the Government, and comes on top of £ 25 million already provided to protect high cost and vulnerable science courses.

Last summer, tens of thousands of good level of students were turned away from universities because of a limit on the number of seats and a funding gap.

Professor Steve Smith, president of Universities UK, which represents principals, said that last year nearly 160,000 students applied to be a safe place at university.

Applications for this year are already 10 per cent in 2009, when the number of application log.

Professor Smith added: “There will be plenty of students this year who do not get a place.” He said the cuts would have an impact on the quality of teaching.

Sally Hunt, general secretary of the University and College Union, said: “If these cuts forward the dreams of thousands of students, encouraged to apply to university by the Government, will be shattered. The massive funding cuts will impact. The industry simply can not do more for less.

“Our higher education system is already creaking under the pressure of government efficiency savings.”

Dr Wendy Piatt, director general of the Russell Group, said: “Our main institutions can not remain competitive internationally, provide a first experience in teaching and the level of generous support to provide disadvantaged students do not have access to a increased funding.

Professor Les Ebdon, chair of million +, which represents new universities, claimed that as a result of the cuts, the number of places available in institutions in 2010/11 would be the same as in 2008 / 9, and lower than this academic year.

Professor Ebdon, who is also vice-chancellor of the University of Bedfordshire, said: “This is totally counterintuitive.

“The evidence points to increasing demand, but funding for student support, which the Department of Commerce, Innovation and capabilities intended to enable newly recruited 10,000 students in 2009 has been withdrawn and universities do not have these numbers available for students wishing to enter university in 2010.

David Lammy, the Minister of Universities, said: “There has been a lot of scaremongering on the savings that we have asked HEFCE to do. But we are confident they can achieve these HEFCE in a way that minimizes the impact on teaching and students as requested in our recent award letter.

Mr Mandelson last month told its partners that act as tighter budgets create a “” to universities to find alternative sources of money and “mind focus” on quality teaching and research.

Charlotte Andrews, 22, moved home after graduating from the University of Chichester, with a degree in studies of the media last year. She waitresses for four months before finding work experience in a public relations agency in London. “I did not want to stay in Chichester and I knew I wanted to work in London, so it was cheaper to live and travel with my parents because I could not afford to go out on my own,” he said.

She now has a job to earn £ 17,500 a year as assistant public relations account, but lives at home in Epsom, Surrey, and pays £ 200 a month in rent to his mother and father who are responsible for all meals , washing and ironing. “I pay for my car and my phone. Once the rent and bills have come and have a social life that there is not much. This year I found my feet, but next year I will start putting money each month and, finally, I want to go out and get my own place. ”

Charlotte thinks it will be able to leave in 2011. “That gives me a couple of years to save.”

She has a good relationship with their parents, but it was difficult to adjust at first, after college. “Sometimes I am sure that bother them, but that’s like any other child”.
