1 in 5 UK University Students is a Hacker

We all know hacking has always been popular among students and young generation. However, the figures revealed by a survey of University students are shocking.

According to a survey conducted by Security outfit, Tufin Technologies with support from the Association of Cheif Police Officer, found that over a fifth students in UK universities had hacked at least once in their students life.

The Survey of 1,000 UK university students shows that despite only 4% of students are studying computer sciences, 37% of them had hacked Facebook accounts, 26% email accounts with 10% breaching very serious activities like shopping online etc.

More surprising for me is that 39% of hackers use their own computer, others have used public computers and networks with 32% a university machine and 23% using an internet café.

The survey also found around 84% respondents saying that hacking was wrong, but that did not stop all of them from attempting it. There was no gender bias as equal number of boys and girls attempted hacking, while 18% of the students said that hacking was an easy task.

Survey also revealed that 46% of students with social networking or email accounts became victims to hacking.

Tufin Technologies’ Vice President of Products, Marketing & Business Development, Shaul Efraim, said that more than one in three students hacked someone’s system for fun, while a quarter said they were just curious.

Speaking on the findings, Efraim said, “It is clear we have a smart new generation emerging who understand how to get around computer systems – some are doing it just for fun others with slightly more sinister intent.”

The e-crime specialist with the Association of Chief Police Officers, Deputy Chief Constable Stuart Hyde, said that hacking was illegal and it’s imperative to educate youngsters about the bad effects of hacking.

We need to get some better laws in place now, before cyber crimes spiral out of control. The stats are crazy to me… so many hackers in the UK!
